About the book
During the German occupation of France. The Maquis were men who had escaped into the mountains and woods to avoid conscription into Vichy France’s Service du travail obligatoire. Winston Churchill’s Special Operations Executive in Baker Street, London, sent men and women to support and arm the Maquis and other groups of Resistance into trained fighters so they could help fight back against Nazi oppression. With the aim of ultimately destroying the German armies when the Allied invasion occurred – on 6th June 1944.
The women secret agents volunteered or were chosen because they spoke fluent French, they came from all walks of life and of different nationalities. They knew it was unlikely they would see their countries again but accepted the risk.
Some of them were captured, some tortured, and some died in concentration camps.
A few of them survived the war and tried to return to normal life.
I write more about these women on my author page.
