About the book
Amidst the chaos of war, right before The Battle of Britain, Cherry falls in love with Joe, an American RAF pilot in Eagle Squadron. As the war – and her love life – goes through ups and downs, the camaraderie between the WAAFs offers her solace from homesickness and fear. After training with the RAF Air Ambulance team, Cherry and her squad, dubbed the ‘Flying Nightingales’ by the media become the first female airborne paramedics.
They fly into enemy-occupied territory after D-Day to bring home the seriously injured from the beaches of Normandy. Joined by Dakota pilot Ted, Cherry and her team undertake daring mission after daring mission to rescue the wounded across Europe as the Allies advance against a relentless enemy.
This book is an historical fiction but based on the real-life stories of the Flying Nightingales. Some of them lost their lives during these mercy flights.
